The Our Country 2 Project

Our Country 2 was a Stevenage-centred, cultural and educational project run by Stevenage World Forum.

Three core strands formed part of Our Country 2:

  • The 'C' Factor – this was a series of community-based, interactive workshops where different ethnic groups shared aspects of their culture with others over a number of days.
  • Culture Street – ethnic community members ran interactive workshops in a number of local schools and play-schemes, educating children about culture and heritage. Children were also encouraged to explore and record their family history.
  • Across the Oceans – various members of the ethnic communities shared elements of their cultures and their journey to and in Stevenage.

Over the duration of one year, May 2010 – May 2011, the project worked with various ethnic community groups and with local schools, aiming to educate and inspire the younger generation as well as the wider community about other cultures and heritage.

Through a series of fun and interactive community and school workshops, the Our Country 2 project gave local community members and school pupils opportunities to participate in various interactive workshops such as dancing, drumming, batik painting and henna drawing.

The project also documented the memories, experiences and achievements of members of Stevenage's community. And in so doing, explored elements of their cultures and journeys to and in Stevenage. Some local residents also shared aspects of their cultures and values, through exploring foods and festivals celebrated in their country. This anthology of stories was documented in a booklet, Delicious Memories.

The final products of the project comprise of:

  • Our Country 2 DVD – footage of various elements of the project
  • Our Country 2 CD – stories of individual's journeys to and in Stevenage
  • Delicious Memories – tales of foods and festivals celebrated around the world
  • Our Country 2 brochure – overview of the project

Local primary schools also received a Teacher's Information Pack, which included many fun, cultural-based activities for primary school children.
